Avenue of the Arts, Inc. is created to help coordinate cultural and business initiatives along Broad Street, as part of the city's drive for vibrant urban development under newly-elected Mayor Ed Rendell.

Philadelphia philanthropist Sidney Kimmel, through the Sidney Kimmel Foundation, makes a $12 million grant to the Orchestra for the concert hall project.

The State of Pennsylvania allocates $60 million to the Avenue of the Arts; $34.5 million of the funds are earmarked for the new concert hall.
