The Jazz Heritage In Philadelphia class focuses on some of the world’s most noted jazz artists, which are either from or made Philadelphia their home. These artist’s music and historical significance will be presented.
Objective
Students will learn the legacy of some of the world’s greatest jazz artists to have resided in Philadelphia.
Activity
Students will perform music of some of these artists by way of instruments, singing and movement.

Student Activity
Research the following artists: Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Christian McBride.
Find out the following:
- What high school did they attend?
- What part of Philadelphia are they from?
- Who were their influences?
- What are they doing know?
- Do you know or can you find someone who plays the same instrument as they do? Are they familiar with these artists? (If they are not familiar with them, make sure to tell them about them).
- What song are they most associated with?
- If you can, try and download the song or go to your local library and listen to a recording of the song or of the artist.
