Mendelssohn: Quartet in A Minor, Op. 13
Bartok: Quartet No. 2
Beethoven: Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132
Making its final appearance with PCMS, the Mendelssohn Quartet will retire at the end of the 2009-10 Season. Leading off the evening is Mendelssohn's second quartet—a work of gentle melancholy. The death of Beethoven influenced the passionate and poignant music he composed in Op. 13. Bartok's second quartet represents a new development in the composer's style and has a sense both of concentration and of unerring dramatic drive throughout its three movements. The Mendelssohns bid adieu to PCMS with one of Beethoven's final compositions—The second of three quartets commissioned by Russian Prince Nikolay Golitsin, Op. 132 features a deeply felt slow movement, a "song of thanksgiving" for Beethoven's recovery from illness.
