Brahms: Serenade in A Major, Op. 16
Bottesini: Gran Duo Concertante for Violin and Bass
Stravinsky: Apollon Musagete
Young talent abounds in the Curtis Chamber Orchestra. Performing a challenging program, these all-star prodigies are led by conductor Mischa Santora—Music Director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and third season as Associate Conductor for the Minnesota Orchestra. Kicking off the program is Brahms's Serenade in A Major, Op. 16, composed at Detmold it is not only one of his first large—scale ensemble works, but also show the evolution of an important strain in Brahms's artistic personality—the Romantic adaptation of Classical forms. Giovanni Bottesini, known as "the Paganini of the double-bass," was not only famous as a virtuoso of the double-bass but also a competent composer writing music to show off his technique and his technical innovations-such as the Gran Duo Concertante. After intermission Stravinksy's Apollon Musagete—an abstract or plotless ballet about the Greek god of the sun, who was also associated with intellectual pursuits and music. Written during a time when Stravinsky's harmonic language became more tonal and consonant, though still spiked with sounds no 18th-century composer would have dreamed of, this beautiful ballet Apollo epitomizes his neo-Classical ideals.
All artists and programs subject to change.
