Overview

Project: The presence of Jazz and Faith of the African American experience

Project Description: “This three prong work will seek to acknowledge the presence of jazz and faith of the African American experience to music. We are writing this body of work as a means to acknowledge contributions of African American's to the jazz and faith experience. Many composers from Mary Lou Williams to Duke Ellington acknowledge the presence of faith in their music and composed as well as performed within these idioms. We seek to further this meeting of musical genres of faith and jazz to broaden and deepen the definition of what jazz music can be.”

The Kimmel Center’s Jazz Residency program is made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. We would also like to thank Waterman II Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation, and the Presser Foundation for their generous support of this program.
