Mahler: Symphony No. 2 in C minor 'Resurrection'
Join the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) in Verizon Hall for the culmination of its anniversary season, the 73rd Anniversary Festival Concert. Led by Maestro Louis Scaglione, the program's music director and conductor, the concert features Gustav Mahler's monumental work, his Symphony No. 2. The Second Symphony has been said to be Mahler's most optimistic view of an afterlife as the Symphony is far more concerned with the destruction of death than death itself coupled with a struggle for discovering what lies beyond death. The work is a spiritual, quasi-religious declaration and perhaps the most explicit spiritual message the composer ever made. PYO welcomes the Mendelssohn Club Choir, under the artistic direction of Alan Harler, and vocal soloists Michelle Johnson, soprano, and Chrystal Williams, mezzo soprano, for this unforgettable performance.
