String Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 97

Praised by the New Yorker as "a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets," the Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among the new generation of string ensembles. In a program that features early quartets by Felix Mendelssohn and Alban Berg it is the String Quintet in E-flat Major by Antonín Dvorák in which the virtuoso violist Nokuthula Ngwenyama joins the Daedalus that makes this evening a 'can't miss concert.' Of Zimbabwean-Japanese parentage, Ngwenyama 'provides solidly shaped music of bold, mesmerizing character' (Gramophone Magazine). Dvorák's String Quintet, Op. 97, which shares the subtitle "American" with his better-known Op. 96 String Quartet, was composed in 1893 in view of a landscape that was new in his life: the cornfields of our own Midwest, as seen from a Bohemian émigré settlement in Iowa called Spillville.
