String Quintet in D Major, K. 593

One of the world's most celebrated, enduring chamber ensembles returns to the Kimmel Center with its newest member, violinist Joseph Lin having a full season of concerts under his belt. It was not long after Mr. Lin joined the esteemed Juilliard Quartet that the New York Times reviewed the ensemble: 'Lin's sound is warm, flexible and perfectly centered; his instincts about when to lead and when to fall back seemed finely honed; and his interpretive impulses closely match those of his new colleagues: Ronald Copes, Samuel Rhodes, and Joel Krosnick.' For its February program, the Juilliard focuses on a pair of works from the end of the lives of Beethoven and Mozart. Sandwiched in between is a String Quintet by its violist Mr. Rhodes composed in 1968. 'My Quintet was written while I was studying at Princeton Unviersity for my Master of Fine Arts degree. It was completed shortly before I joined the Juilliard Quartet. I was attracted to Princeton by the prospect of studying and having close contact with Roger Sessions whom I much admired. His influence is very much felt in the piece, particularly in the first movement. My own style developed more and more in the second and third movements.'
