Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48

An annual highlight of the PCMS season is our collaborative concert with the Curtis Institute. The March 11th event entitled Two x Four is a project which celebrates the relationship between teacher and student through music. Jennifer Koh and Jaime Laredo will perform Double Concerti for Two Violins by J.S. Bach and Philip Glass, as well as newly commissioned works by composers Anna Clyne and Curtis composition faculty, David Ludwig ('01). The program concludes with Tchaikovsky's masterpiece—his Serenade for Strings in C Major. In a letter from October 1880 Tchaikovsky said that, although the piece was written based on his inner impulse, its artistic value had not been lost. The C Major Serenade is a crystallization of his pursuit of genuine formal beauty using strings alone, and of the balanced beauty of the classical music. In order words, this piece shows the West European taste of Tchaikovsky, who is often said to have belonged to the European school.
