Arnold Steinhardt, the legendary violinist of the esteemed Guarneri Quartet, attended a performance of the Johannes in New York last season and shortly thereafter made the following statement: 'The Johannes Quartet, comprised of four impressively gifted instrumentalists in their own right, have come together to form one of the great chamber music groups of our time. They play with technical polish, with deep musical understanding, and with uncommon inspiration. The Johannes is all I could ever dream of in a string quartet." Most PCMS patrons who attend the annual Johannes concerts in Philadelphia would certainly agree that an evening with this special ensemble is indeed quite memorable. As if performing two Brahms String Quartets on one program were not enough, in the second half the Johannes is joined by the gifted and thoughtful pianist Ignat Solzhenitsyn in a performance of Franck's ultra-expressive Piano Quintet in F Minor—Nadia Boulanger said it contains more ppp and fff markings than any other chamber piece.
