Jebney Lewis Project
Kimmel Tier 2 LoungeJanuary 1, 1901 — Completion of Philadelphia City Hall
Join artist and educator Jebney Lewis for an afternoon of discovery in the heart of Center City. We'll go on a fact-finding exploration of City Hall, the Wannamaker Organ, and the buildings of South Broad Street. We'll learn about the early days of the Mummer's parade, the unveiling of the world's largest operating musical instrument, and the symbols and stories behind the tallest masonry structure on earth! What was happening in Philadelphia at the turn of the 20th Century that made people want such giant displays of civic pride? After discovering many stories and secrets hidden in the skyline, we'll return to the Kimmel Center and get to work constructing our own version of a miniature Center City. We'll echo the work of builders, artists, and planners of the past by making buildings and streets and filling them with art, architecture, music and pageantry that reflects the hopes and dreams of today. This collaborative public art project, appropriate for families with children ages 8 to 80, will be on display for the last two weeks of the festival.
