More than 15,000 children passed through Terezin Concentration Camp during the Holocaust; less than 100 survived. Children from Wolf Performing Arts Center will bring to life the voices, the words, and the art of these children who were silenced during the Holocaust. The play by Celeste Raspanti, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, based on the book of the same name, uses the art and poetry from the children of Terezin to tell their story of courage and survival. The story follows Raja Englanderova, a young Jewish girl, as she enters the concentration camp alone. Just when all seems lost, she meets a hopeful teacher, Irena Synkova, who helps her and the rest of the children express themselves through art and poetry. Raja finds strength, hope and love in her people. She survives Terezin, not alone and not afraid. In the 2012-13 season, Wolf Performing Arts Center will bring this production to schools, places of worship, and cultural centers throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area free of charge. The final performance will commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 2013, when all of the children who have been involved with this project will take the stage together. Along with the performance, 15,000 handmade butterflies will be on display. These butterflies, created by audiences and friends of The Butterfly Project, will honor the memory of the children lost to one of the most destructive periods in human history.
