Kick off the summer in style at the Kimmel Center's annual Summer Solstice extravaganza! This year we're mixing things up. The celebration launches at noon with a giant drum circle, followed by an afternoon of kid-friendly activities, classical, jazz and dance performances. When the sun sets, the party heats up with indie bands, singer-songwriters, club dancing, and even a drag show—an audience favorite every year! Stay tuned for updates on artists and programming.

Her music touches the heartstrings of kids as young as 3 and as old as 80.

Experience rarely-played music that is rich, deep, wicked, jaunty, impish, profound, hard-rocking and so much more, played by the group about which Time Out New York wrote "...should make New Yorkers envy Philadelphia for its sparkling baroque ensemble, Tempesta di Mare."

Phillie Phanatic will also make an appearance during the children friendly storytelling hour at The Lounge by Wolfgang Puck on Tier 1.

Dubbed the "'IT girl' in kids/family music" by NY Magazine and the "Sheryl Crow for kids" by the NY Post, Bari's songs are a huge hit with children and adults. Her catchy, pop friendly tunes, interactive live shows & heavy rotation radio play have gained the band literally thousands of young (and not so young!) fans. Their latest album Rock and Roll Garden won the 2010 Nappa Gold and Parent's Choice Award and was voted top 10 kids album of the year by Time Out Kids.

Threeds, a New York City-based oboe trio of Kathy Halvorson, Katie Scheele and Mark Snyder, enjoys exploring a wide variety of music from all time periods and all corners of the world. Threeds have also arranged music to accompany singer-songwriters, and have been featured at several NYC music venues including Joe's Pub, the Living Room, and Pete's Candy Store.

Portrait is a circus creation featuring artists Melvin Diggs, Olivia Weinstein, Marta Henderson, and Kyle Driggs. The four artists, currently studying at the National Circus School in Montreal, show a glimpse of life in circus school and the powerful bond of friendship. "Portrait" is a moment in the life of the students and wishes to present a mix of both traditional and new circus ideas and disciplines in preparation for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe co-presentation of TRACES.

Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble
The Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program features a weekend music education course directed by producer/composer Anthony Tidd. The Youth Jazz Ensemble includes students ranging in age from 13 to 18, who will be performing selections from the pieces they have studied this year, including jazz standards chosen by band leader Victor North, as well as original compositions written by band leaders Steve Tirpak, Craig Mciver and Anthony Tidd.

Yue Chu
Born in China, Yue Chu won his first performance competition at age eight. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Mr. Chu is now a student in the Artist Diploma program at Curtis Institute of Music, where he studies with Seymour Lipkin and Meng-Chieh Luh, Gary Graffman, and Robert McDonald. Yue Chu's many live performances include the Perelman Music Program in Shelter Island, NY, the Ravinia Music Festival, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Celebrating their 91st year, the Aqua String Band has entertained countless people and has celebrated its unique Philadelphia Mummers tradition across the globe. Enjoy a unique blend of banjos, saxophones, accordions, and percussion, all dressed in breathtaking one-of-a kind costumes as Aqua recreates the sights, sounds, and spirit of Philadelphia's historic New Year's Day Parade.

Oscuro Quintet
The Oscuro Quintet, Philadelphia's premier tango ensemble, brings to life the music of Argentine tango, tango nuevo, and contemporary music. Its five musicians come from a variety of nationalities and backgrounds. With performances all over Philadelphia, from local parks and dance halls, to stages such as the Philadelphia Art Museum and the Painted Bride Art Center, the quintet evokes the passion and grace of the tango style while pushing the boundaries of new music development. They will be joined by Urban Tango dancers Marc Hussner and Kristina McFadden along with Tango singer Tomás Alcón.

Ghenady Meirson, music director and pianist. Electric violinist Caryn Lin provides the musical backdrop for SA VA's Summer Nature Worship!

The 7 piece band, who's ages range from 15 to 17, are students of the Kimmel Youth Jazz Ensemble, Philadelphia Clef Club and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. The solid 3 piece rhythm section with a full 4 piece horn section will get you movin' and groovin' from the first song to the last.

Do You Need The Service?
Winner of our first-ever YouTube Audition contest, Do You Need The Service? tosses aside lyrics and brings the rhythm section to the forefront. They proudly wear their new wave and prog, post-punk and Krautrock, influences filtered through modern ears. Despite some of these musician-favored influences, the band is devoted to hooks and song structure that rope the listener in, despite the lack of vocals. Philadelphia's instrumental pleasure givers are in their third year of performing live. Initially built around the core of Justin Hallman and Mark Sconyers with a revolving lineup, the band is now firmly entrenched as a four-piece.

First Person Arts is excited to bring their popular StorySlam back to the Summer Solstice. Regularly held twice a month at World Cafe Live and L’Etage, StorySlams are storytelling competitions where members of the audience can share their own personal story. Have a good tale on the theme “Summer Vacation?” Then sign up outside of the Perelman Theater prior to show time. We’ll pick ten storytellers over the course of the performance and maybe you’ll walk away the winner!

Phil Roy with Marc Vetri
Singer-songwriter Phil Roy and acclaimed chef Marc Vetri met five years ago and immediately recognized that each had more than a passing interest in the other's art form. Phil had been expressing his culinary talents by cooking 4-course meals served during private concerts in his home. Marc had long been a serious guitar student and was eager to share his unique and growing talents. Together they created an instantly popular, intimate series of "dinner concerts" at Marc's Philadelphia restaurant Osteria. Now the two bring their music to the Verizon Hall stage for this special Solstice performance.

Rafiya
Rafiya was born in Los Angeles to Congolese parents: a diplomat father and a sociologist mother, while attending Temple University Rafiya found time to work with local artists, absorbing their techniques and wisdom all the while enriching her sound. She has worked with Oscar Kidjo, recorded in Youssou N’Dour’s studio and toured France and North Africa with French rap star, Mokobe. Every passing collaboration, studio session and performance strengthened her ever-present belief that she would be spending her life making music; making people smile, dance and think.

Nicole Reynolds
Singer songwriter Nicole Reynolds was born into a family of Pittsburgh steelworkers. She wrote her first album Wolves Won't Eat Us while living in Philadelphia in 2006. Her next three albums, This Arduous Alchemy (2007), Unordinary Mine (2008), and A Fine Set of Fools (2009), were all written while she lived and worked on a small organic sheep farm in western Pennsylvania. Don't miss her sweet vocals paired with intense lyrics and a unique folksong style often compared to the likes of Kimya Dawson or Mirah.

Young Savage is a Southwest Philly native whose newly-released single, "Higher", is getting play on both major and independent radio. Young Savage has also been invited to be a featured artist on "Inside The Studio" session at Power 99FM. The purpose of the collective of emcees known as R6 Cypher is to: Reinvent, Reintroduce, Redefine, Rejuvenate, Revamp and Resurrect Philadelphia Hip Hop. What started out as a bar in a verse has become a mantra for Chill Moody, who has been compared to rappers such as Common, Black Thought, J.Cole, and Talib Kweli. Urban Celebrity Magazine is a Philadelphia based quarterly Hip Hop magazine whose mission is to educate readers about Philly Hip Hop culture and its key contributors.
