Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble
February is notoriously known as cupid's time for plucking bows with arrows...Whether single or coupled, celebrating the anti-Valentine's Day or looking for a free Black History Month engagement, the Kimmel Center's Friday LIVE series offers the perfect atmosphere to gather with friends for free, festive musical fare with celebratory cocktails.

The Free at the Kimmel series includes:
  • Friday LIVE, a series of free musical performances by regional musicians on the Commonwealth Plaza stage every Friday from 5:30pm to 7:15pm throughout the 2009/10 season.  
  • PNC Grow Up Great free concerts for kids in Commonwealth Plaza
  • Free themed tours, including the new Academy of Music Tours, Building & Theater Tours, Art & Architecture Tours are conducted daily by experienced volunteer guides.

Chelsea Mitchell
Chelsea Mitchell is a singer-songwriter and guitarist with a newly released LP entitled If I Got Mine. With thoughtful lyrics, emotional delivery and a voice that has been compared to Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan and Paula Cole, Mitchell will surely start your weekend on the right note.

Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble
Celebrate Black History Month at the Kimmel Center with the Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble! The ensemble celebrates the beauty of family and honors Africa through traditional songs, instruments, dance and drum. PNC Grow Up Great concerts for kids take place at 11am on the first Saturday of each month from October through May in the Kimmel Center's Commonwealth Plaza, unless otherwise noted at www.kimmelcenter.org/family.

The Joe Baione Quartet
The Joe Baione Quartet consists of some of the best rising stars in jazz. The group has most recently performed at The Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Trinidad and Tobago Jazz Festival and the White House. Music consist of many of Baione's original compositions from his first two albums, Superhero and Oh Yeah!!, with Latin and African influences. According to Jazz Times, "A bebopper at heart, the Delaware-based vibraphonist Joe Baione plays with conviction and passion."

Keisha Hutchins
Singer-songwriter, Keisha Hutchins first came on to the Philadelphia music scene as the lead-singer for the down-tempo electronic group Vanishing Peoples of the Earth. Since then, Hutchins has been involved in multiple projects and focused on creating her signature blend of folk and soul. Her CD Dedicated is available now at concerts and on iTunes.

Academy of Music Tour - NEW!

Visit this historic grand opera house, decorated in baroque style, for a tour that includes the Grand Lobby, Stage Door Canteen, the recently renovated Ballroom and the main auditorium with its dazzling chandelier. Due to the Academy's busy performance calendar, tours are available on select dates, by reservation only. Call 215-790-5886 for information and reservations. This tour is approximately one hour in duration.

Building & Theater Tour
Join us for a themed tour which includes a history of the Kimmel Center; architectural and construction highlights; and visits to Commonwealth Plaza, Perelman Theater, Verizon Hall, Merck Arts Education Center and the Dorrance H. Hamilton Garden. This tour is approximately one hour in duration.

Art & Architecture Tour
Join us for a themed tour which includes an in-depth look at the Kimmel Center's architecture, a walk along the Avenue of the Arts to view the Center in the context of the cityscape, and a tour of artworks on display throughout the Kimmel Center, including the Moore Galleries and the recently installed Percent for Art collection. This tour is approximately 90 minutes in duration.
