London-based indie-rock trio The xx performs at the Merriam Theater on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 8pm.  The group first came together in 2005 to self-record and produce their self-titled debut album, The xx, 2010 Barclay Mercury Prize winner for best UK album of the year.  Hit singles like “Crystalized,” “Islands” and “Basic Space” have steadily climbed the Top 10 of the UK charts, distinguishing the band’s R&B, bass-driven, electronic, underground pop rock sound.  The xx includes band members Romy Madley-Croft (vocals), Oliver Sim (bass), and Jamie Smith (beats, MPC sampler).

Tickets for The xx are available from $25 to $28.50 by calling 215-893-1999, online at, or at the Kimmel Center Box Office located on Broad and Spruce streets, Philadelphia, PA 19102, which is open daily from 10am to 6pm.

All 21 years-old, The xx are childhood friends who formed while attending the Elliot School in south west London.  Other notable alumni include acclaimed boundary-pushers as Burial, Four Tet and Hot Chip. Bonding over a shared love of stripped back anti-folk and mid-90s R&B, The xx’s unique sound derives from an array of influences, ranging from Aaliyaah to CocoRosie, Rhianna to The Cure & Missy Elliot to the Chromatics.

Their debut album The xx is a compilation of hushed vocal duets, with inventive use of samplers and low-end frequencies, as witnessed in a cover of the band’s favorite Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire.” Their debut album was ranked No. 2 on NME Magazine’s “Best of the Year” list.
