Ray Davies was lead frontman and songwriter of legendary London-based rock group, The Kinks, from 1964 to 1996, producing mid 1960’s gems like “You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All of the Night,” and “I Need You” to more sensitive, thought-provoking works, such as, “Waterloo Sunset.” In 2008, Rolling Stone magazine profiled Ray Davies, deeming him “an anthropologist with a guitar” for his maturity in expressing song lyrics with keen, observational storytelling that reflected on the social issues of the working class British class system. The 1969 album, Arthur (or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), as well as songs such as “She’s bought a Hat Like Princess Marina” are a small sampling of his vast repertoire of music, ranging from rock and roll and blues to his latter explorations showing influences of vaudeville, traditional jazz and ragtime music.
The Kinks disbanded in 1996, and since then Davies has toured independently. He has released five solo albums, including Return to Waterloo (1985), The Storyteller (1998), Other People’s Lives (2006), which was a top 40 album in the U.K., Working Man’s Café (2007) and The Kinks Choral Collection (2009), as well as the compilation Ray Davies—Collected (2009).
