SEPTEMBER 19, 2012
Kimmel Center Presents In Association with Bowery Presents
Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m.
After a sold-out engagement in 2010, legendary folk singer-songwriter John Prine returns to the Merriam Theater for one night only on Friday, November 16 at 8p.m. Grammy-nominated folk artist, Sarah Jarosz, will open the show.
Prine's body of work has become the high-water mark of American songwriting, and his songs have found a home in the wheelhouse of musical luminaries from Bonnie Raitt and Johnny Cash to George Strait. With immeasurable accolades, including two Grammys and the distinction of being one of the few songwriters honored by the Library of Congress and U.S. Poet Laureate, Prine is more than a musician—he is an American treasure.
Now over forty years since his remarkable debut, John Prine has released The Singing Mailman Delivers, a two-disc archival set featuring his earliest studio and live recordings dating back to 1970, one year before his premiere album. These tracks reveal a younger Prine as an honest and unassuming songwriter, writing words on his mail route by day and moonlighting as a folk singer in Chicago clubs at night.
Tickets go on sale Friday, September 28 at 10 a.m. at kimmelcenter.org, 215-893-1999, or at the Kimmel Center Box Office located on Broad and Spruce streets, Philadelphia, Pa. (open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., later on performance evenings). Tickets are available for $49.50 to $75.00, plus applicable service charges.
Multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Jarosz, originally from Austin, Texas, is one of the fastest rising stars in folk music. Jarosz flourished growing up in the local Austin music scene and released her debut album, Song Up In Her Head, the same year she graduated from high school. The album garnered her a Grammy nomination, as well as performances on A Prairie Home Companion and Austin City Limits, and at numerous festivals, such as Bonnaroo, Telluride, and Newport. Jarosz is currently a junior at the prestigious New England Conservatory in Boston, Mass., where in May 2011 she released her sophomore album, Follow Me Down, to wide critical acclaim.
