Folk Icons Peter, Paul and Mary Perform at the Kimmel Center, June 14

APRIL 29, 2009

Folk icons Peter, Paul and Mary perform works from their canon of classics at the Kimmel Center on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 7:30pm in Verizon Hall. At the forefront of a new wave of folk poets, the "folk-pop supergroup" introduced the work of Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton to a wider audience, popularizing such works as Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and "Blowin' in the Wind." Their program at the Kimmel Center will turn the spotlight on folk classics such as "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and Pete Seeger's classic "If I Had a Hammer."

"Peter, Paul and Mary are not only three of the greatest folk artists ever, but also three of the performing arts' most outstanding champions of social justice and peace...Their compassion and commitment remain as strong as their extraordinary artistry."—Coretta Scott King, late author, activist and wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This concert is the final performance in the World & Pop Series scheduled for the Kimmel Center Presents 2008-09 season.

Throughout a decades-long career, the trio has garnered five Grammys®, produced 13 Top 40 hits, of which six ascended into the Top 10, as well as eight gold and five platinum albums. The group's discography includes their first all-new studio recording in nearly a decade, In These Times (2004), and the boxed set Carry It On (2004), featuring the trio's classic works, B-sides and previously unreleased songs. The trio's most recent release, The Very Best of Peter, Paul and Mary (2005), presents 25 of their biggest hits. Peter, Paul and Mary have consistently promoted a message of humanity, hope and activism through their music. The trio has supported social justice causes with performances at landmark events from the historic 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, to an anti-nuclear benefit at the Hollywood Bowl in 1978. Most recently, their individual and collective efforts have focused on such issues as gun violence, homelessness, world hunger and education.
