Kimmel Center Announces Audition Schedule for Seventh Annual Tuition-Free Teen Summer Arts Camps, May 2-16
APRIL 9, 2009
The summer program provides the opportunity for talented, young artists to spend 10 intense days developing their artistic and creative skills with highly respected teaching artists from the performing arts community. The two-week arts sessions culminate with solo and ensemble demonstrations — "Moments of Sharing" — on Friday afternoons in Perelman Theater or Verizon Hall.
Pre-registration deadline is April 24, 2009—a requirement for students interested in auditioning for the tuition-free summer camp. More information follows below on pre-registration process.
The audition schedule is as follows:
Choral/Vocal: Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 1pm-3pm
Merck Arts Education Center
Within
a group setting, applicants must demonstrate vocal technique and
sustain a vocal part within a choral selection chosen by the conductor.
Jazz: Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Noon-3pm
Merck Arts Education Center
Within a group setting, applicants must perform music selected by the
conductor and respond to the requested musical directions.
Chamber Music: Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 1pm-4pm
Merck Arts Education Center
Each applicant must prepare a classical music solo that demonstrates
technical ability with regard to sight-reading and scales as well as
musicality.
Pipe Organ: By teacher recommendation
Applicants must send a recorded performance and a letter of
recommendation from their private teacher to 2008 Teen Summer Arts
Camp, Kimmel Center, Inc., 260 S. Broad St. Suite 901, Philadelphia, PA
19102.
Teen Summer Arts Camp takes place June 22-July 31, 2009, with sessions from 10am-4pm. The four distinct camps are attended by a total of more than 150 students each year and will be held on the following dates:
- Choral/Vocal camp: June 22- July 2
- Jazz Camp: July 6-17
- Pipe Organ Camp: July 13-24
- Chamber Music Camp: July 20-31
Program Features:
- Scholarships offered to all accepted students
- Small group instruction
- Coaching sessions
- Daily ensemble rehearsals

- Interaction with talented student artists from Tri-state area
Camp Descriptions:
- Choral/Vocal (ages 14 – 18)
Students study vocal technique, sight-singing and perform choral music of various styles and genres in small and full ensembles. - Jazz (ages 14 – 18)
Students study various styles of jazz music including Dixieland, Swing, Afro-Cuban and Contemporary, and perform in large and small ensembles. - Chamber Music (ages 14 – 18)
Students study various genres of chamber music in small and large ensemble settings. - Pipe Organ (By teacher recommendation)
Students will study and perform on two magnificent pipe organs: The Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ at the Kimmel Center and the Wanamaker Organ at Macy's. (The practice organs in the Kimmel Center are generously provided by the Allen Organ Company.)

Application deadline is Friday, April 24, 2009.

2. A non-refundable registration fee of $25 for each camp registration form (Make check payable to Kimmel Center Teen Summer Arts Camp or use the secure registration form to pay online)
3. Compose an essay,
in 200 words or less, describing your artistic talent, performance
experiences, and how your contributions will make the camp successful.

The Kimmel Center Teen Summer Arts Camp is generously supported by the Sidney Kimmel Foundation.
Since the dedication of the Merck Arts Education Center in September 2002, the Kimmel Center's Education Department has offered school groups in Grades 5-12 from the Tri-state area free arts education classes in music, dance and theater arts. All sessions are hands-on, interactive activities designed to stimulate creativity and promote arts appreciation. Additional educational activities for students and adults include a tuition-free teen summer arts camp, a youth jazz ensemble, master classes, a series of student concerts, artists chats before and following concerts, and outreach programs to schools in the community for dance and pre-school arts and literacy programs.
