June 13, 2000

Believing strongly that the Center will be instrumental to the continued revitalization of Philadelphia and the regional economy, Mr. Kimmel first pledged $12 million to the project in 1993, then contributed another $3 million in 1998. "This kind of contribution sends a tremendous signal, not only of Mr. Kimmel's support for this great landmark, but for his decision to be a true visionary and leader in assuring Philadelphia's future," explains Stephanie Naidoff, RPAC's President.
Mr. Kimmel has been involved with the project since 1993, taking a special interest in the design process. The Center commissioned Rafael Viñoly Architects, PC in 1997, and Mr. Kimmel has since spent much time with the world-renowned architect. "Sidney is a real inspiration!" exclaims Viñoly. "He has been totally supportive of the creative process throughout this entire project, and has been a delight to work with."
"I am honored to be associated with a project of this caliber," says Kimmel. "This Center is going to elevate our performers and audiences alike. I think it's going to have a tremendous impact on our city's psyche and economy."
A Philadelphia native, Mr. Kimmel's more than 40 successful years in the apparel industry began at a North Philadelphia knitting mill. He founded Jones Apparel Group, Inc. in the 1970s, which, under his leadership, has become one of the nation's premier multi-brand apparel companies. "It is my privilege to give something back to the people of Philadelphia, with the promise that today's youth will learn and grow through the arts," Kimmel explains.
Well known for his diverse philanthropy, Mr. Kimmel has been particularly dedicated to the fight against cancer. He established The Sidney Kimmel Foundation in 1993, and has since committed more than $100 million to a variety of causes, namely cancer research, education and culture. He has also supported a number of Philadelphia institutions, including the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University.
"It is a real thrill to support RPAC's goals for providing a world-class setting for the Philadelphia Orchestra and other resident companies," explains Kimmel. "I am particularly excited about the extensive educational programs that will be an integral part of the new Center's activities. This Center belongs to all of us - the theater and music audience, the international visitor, and especially our young people who are just beginning their arts and cultural educations. I am thrilled that this dream has finally become a reality."
Mr. Kimmel and his wife, Caroline, reside in Manhattan, Palm Beach and Philadelphia.
