"United We Sing" -- Regional Performing Arts Center To Present Free Benefit Concert On Anniversary Of September 11th Attack
October 2, 2001
Philadelphia’s Regional Performing Arts Center will host a free, benefit concert on Thursday, October 11, to mark the one month anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attack on America.
"United We Sing," featuring singers and choirs from around the Philadelphia area, will be held at the Academy of Music at Broad and Locust Streets beginning at 7:30 p.m. Audience members will have song sheets and will be asked to raise their voices along with the choirs in a mass show of unity.
"Throughout history, the arts have played an important role in times of crisis," said RPAC President Leslie Anne Miller. "We are committed to serving the community we call home and want our doors to be open for public gatherings, especially in times of need."
Taking the stage will be singers from the Philadelphia Gospel Seminar Choir, The Mendelssohn Club, the Temple University Choir, Singing City, the High School for Creative and Performing Arts, and the Bright Hope Baptist Church Celestial Choir. The program will be a combination of gospel, spiritual, classical and patriotic musical selections. The goal is to have 300 voices on stage and 3,000 more in the audience all raised in song to pay tribute to the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, and to honor the spirit of America.
All of the performers are donating their time and talent.
The concert is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at the door. Donations will benefit the American Red Cross.
The Regional Performing Arts Center
On December 16, 2001, the Regional Performing Arts Center (RPAC) will open The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts at Broad and Spruce Streets on Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts. RPAC also operates the historic Academy of Music. The two venues combined make the Regional Performing Arts Center one of the largest performing arts complexes in the nation.
