President George W. Bush Visits The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts
March 12, 2002
President George W. Bush today visited Philadelphia's newest landmark, The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, during a trip to Philadelphia to promote volunteerism.
President Bush conducted a "conversation on service" inside The Kimmel Center's intimate 650-seat Perelman Theater, honoring the work of six volunteers who joined him on stage, and calling on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours of community service. Hundreds of volunteers from local service organizations and other invited guests listened from the audience. Kimmel Center President and CEO Janice Price greeted the President following his remarks.
White House officials cited the "beautiful venue" and The Kimmel Center's public spaces as reasons for choosing The Kimmel Center for the President's visit.
The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, which includes the Perelman Theater and the 2,500-seat Verizon Hall, opened in December 2001. The Kimmel Center is open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and later on evenings with performances.
Nearly 300 men and women, ranging in age from 18 to 88, volunteer at The Kimmel Center.
