The Moore Galleries were created at the behest of an anonymous donor, whose $5 million dollar endowment gift to The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will ensure upkeep and maintenance of The Kimmel Center for years to come.
"We thank Moore President Happy Fernandez and all the faculty and students of Moore. Your gifts of beauty, creativity and imagination enhance our performing arts center by adding visual arts to our musical and architectural artistic offerings," said Janice Price, President and CEO of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. "And we offer special tribute to our anonymous donor, whose extraordinary gift helps us transition from construction to operating mode by giving us the resources we need to maintain this tremendous work of art called The Kimmel Center in a disciplined and foresighted way."
"There were two goals in making this gift," said William C. Bullitt, Esq., who represents the anonymous donor. "The first was to create a special relationship between Philadelphia's newest institution, the beautiful Kimmel Center, and one of its oldest, the venerable Moore College. The second goal is to ensure that The Kimmel Center is still in mint condition when it's as old as Moore. Our hope is that this gift encourages others to contribute to the maintenance endowment that will guarantee Philadelphia's newest treasure remains as glorious as the day it opened."
Located on the first tier of The Kimmel Center, The Moore College of Art & Design North and South Galleries highlight a diverse selection of work, representing the fine and design arts taught at Moore through rotating exhibitions of work by students, graduates and faculty. The galleries, like The Kimmel Center, are open to the public daily from 10am to 6pm and later on evenings with performances.
The current exhibition, Moore Selections, features the works of Ida Nadia Afiff, 2D Fine Arts; Amber Barnshaw, 3D Fine Arts; Francine Caccese, 3D Fine Arts; Lauren DiColli, Graphic Design; Joanna Steinbacher, Textile Design; Rose Marie Veltri, 3D Fine Arts; Lisa Whiteside, Graphic Design; Selin Cileli, 3D Fine Arts; and Corinne Deehan, 2D Fine Arts. All of the women were seniors this year and graduated on May 6th. The young artists were recognized during the dedication by Paul Hubbard, Professor and Chair, 3D Fine Arts, who judged the exhibition.
"This exhibition has special significance because it's the first one entirely of student work," said Happy Fernandez, President of Moore College of Art & Design. "This is an exceptional opportunity to highlight the talent of our students. We are honored to represent the visual arts at The Kimmel Center while sharing the stage with the most celebrated performing artists from the region and around the world."
Founded in 1848, Moore College of Art & Design is the first and only women's visual arts college in the nation granting Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in nine disciplines. As a leader in the cultural community, Moore offers co-educational programs and events through its Center for Professional Development and Education and Young Artists Workshop for boys and girls. Moore's on-campus Goldie Paley Gallery and Levy Gallery for the Arts in Philadelphia provide a dynamic combination of international and local exhibitions, featuring both established and emerging artists.
The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts owns, manages, supports and maintains The Kimmel Center, manages The Academy of Music, and serves as home to nine Resident Companies. These companies include Kimmel Center Presents, a program that offers a rich diversity of choices to complement presentations by the other companies. Activities of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts also include arts-in-education programming provided by the Merck Arts Education Center and free entertainment throughout the year featuring a wide range of local and regional artists.
