Kimmel Center Presents Announces More Than 30 New Events for 2002-2003 Season
World Music and Dance, Pop, Family, Holiday and Special Events Round Out First Full Season of Kimmel Center Presents
August 23, 2002

Raffi kicks off the Kimmel Center Presents season on Saturday, September 28, 2002.

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts has added more than 30 new events to a 2002-2003 season already brimming with world-class artists. The additional performances announced today will bring more world music and dance, pop music, holiday concerts, family shows and special events to the stages of The Kimmel Center and the Academy of Music. Tickets for all performances go on sale Tuesday, September 3 at 10am.

Performers from around the world, including Brazilian sensations Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, India's sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, the Georgian State Dance Company, Argentina's Tango Buenos Aires, Japan's Kodo Drummers and Senegal's Youssou N'Dour will all take center stage in Verizon Hall. The Chieftains return for an encore performance of Irish music and Ballet Folklórico de México, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will end its U.S. tour at The Kimmel Center.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers, Cirque Éloize, The Flaming Idiots, Raffi, and The King's Singers will all bring performances for the entire family while Anne Murray, Oleta Adams, Peabo Bryson, Jon Secada, Jody Watley, the Vienna Choir Boys, George Winston, PDQ Bach and Arlo Guthrie provide a month of holiday entertainment.

Aspiring local artists will get their shot at the big time when Apollo Theater Amateur Night holds auditions and a concert at The Kimmel Center. Celebrate 150 years of Steinway pianos in two concerts featuring six top jazz and classical pianists. Three Mo' Tenors will make their debut at the Academy of Music. Marcel Marceau celebrates his 80th birthday in Philadelphia during his Farewell Tour. The Acting Company will bring Shakespeare to the Perelman Theater. Dance lovers won't want to miss Urban Tap or PHILADANCO's newly announced spring series. Catch an incredible night of jazz when Wynton, Branford, Jason and Delfayo Marsalis all join their father Ellis on the Verizon Hall stage. Then savor an evening of all-Beethoven when pianist Daniel Barenboim gives the season's finale performance next June.

"We're continuing to build a performing arts center that satisfies all artistic tastes," said The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts President and CEO Janice Price. "We received rave reviews for the wonderfully diverse programming of our first summer season. Now we're carrying that diversity through our first full season. We're committed not only to maintaining state-of-the-art venues for our resident companies, but also to showcasing the very best local, regional, and international talent through our Kimmel Center Presents performances."

The performance schedule unveiled today builds on the six jazz, classical and dance subscription series announced in April. Single tickets for the Great Orchestras on Tour, Great Artists, Recitals and Ensembles, Jazz Masters, Jazz Up Close and Dance series, as well as tickets for special performances by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, jazz legend Oscar Peterson and the legendary Vienna Philharmonic also go on sale September 3.

From now until September 3rd, tickets are on sale for subscribers only. Ticket buyers now have the option to create their own subscription series by choosing any three or more Kimmel Center Presents events. Subscription tickets are discounted up to 10% over the regular price of single ticket purchases.

"People who haven't been to The Kimmel Center yet will be surprised when they see what's coming up this season," said The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts Director of Programming and Education Mervon Mehta. "The greatest orchestras in the world will play in Verizon Hall this year, but so will some of the best jazz, pop and world music and dance performers. Perelman Theater will host incredibly talented classical and jazz artists and cutting-edge dance troupes but it's also a perfect venue for full-scale productions like Cirque Éloize or the acrobatics of The Flying Karamazov Brothers. We have more than 80 events under the Kimmel Center Presents banner. I think the region is just beginning to understand that The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is a place for all genres of the performing arts."

A limited number of $10 tickets will be available for every Kimmel Center Presents performance. $10 tickets go on sale the day of the event and can be purchased at The Kimmel Center box office beginning at 5:30pm for evening performances and 11:30am for matinees. Limit one per person.
