Bi-State Agency's Contributions to Performing Arts Center Total $3.5 Million
September 6, 2002

"The Delaware River Port Authority's unique approach to civic involvement is exemplified in its generous support of The Kimmel Center," said The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts Chairman Willard G. Rouse III. "With the DRPA's help, we have realized an important dream for this city and the entire region. We have built an awe-inspiring performing arts center and community center where the public is welcome all the time."
The DRPA's initial grant of $2.5 million in 2000 was a vital milestone in The Kimmel Center's capital campaign. An additional $1 million grant in partnership with the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation will fund enhancements to the building, including new lighting, signage and other public amenities.
"The Delaware River Port Authority is committed to promoting economic development that will benefit residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey," said DRPA Chairman Manuel Stamatakis, "and the arts are a proven engine for growth. The Kimmel Center will boost tourism in the city, improve the quality of life of the people who live and work here and provide immeasurable economic ripples throughout the region."
The announcement was made at 10am just as The DRPA Box Office at The Kimmel Center was opening for business. Single tickets are now on sale for the entire 2002-2003 season of Kimmel Center Presents programming, including jazz, classical, pop, world music and holiday concerts, theater and dance performances, family entertainment and special events. Tickets are also on sale for Kimmel Center Resident Company events and performances including the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Pennsylvania Ballet, The Opera Company of Philadelphia, Peter Nero and the Philly POPSā, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and Philadanco.
"Our new box office will allow The Kimmel Center to provide the highest level of service to our patrons," said Janice Price, President and CEO of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. "By investing in state of the art technology, we have designed a box office that is user-friendly, highly efficient and visually appealing. We are delighted that the DRPA shares our commitment to making The Kimmel Center a vibrant and inviting place where the public will feel welcome every day."
The Kimmel Center and The DRPA Box Office are open from 10am to 6pm every day and later on evenings with performances. Tickets for all performances at The Kimmel Center and the Academy of Music can be purchased at the box office, by phone at 215-893-1999, or online at www.kimmelcenter.org.
