A public service celebrating the life of Willard G. Rouse III will be held on Monday, June 2 at 1:30pm in the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall.

"This is a sad day for the city of Philadelphia - a city Bill Rouse loved so much," said Kimmel Center, Inc. Chairman Daniel J. Whelan. "His devotion to the people of this region was unparalleled. All of us who worked closely with Bill during the building of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will tell you, unequivocally, it never would have happened without him. His sense of humor, his sometimes salty comments, his unyielding determination, his commitment, his vision -- all will be missed enormously. No one will ever fill Bill Rouse’s shoes."

"Bill Rouse was truly a visionary - there’s no other word," said Kimmel Center, Inc. President and CEO Janice Price. "He has changed the landscape of Philadelphia forever. The Kimmel Center would not have opened without his sheer force of will. His vision raised this magnificent building and made it a place where everyone in our community would feel welcome. The Center has fulfilled on that promise in the past 18 months, and I know that made Bill very proud. Today’s news is devastating to everyone who knew and loved Bill. The Kimmel Center family sends its deepest condolences to the entire Rouse family."

The former chairman of the Kimmel Center board of directors, Rouse was the driving force behind the development of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and oversaw its opening in December 2001.
