The Kimmel Center Stays Open All Night for 2003 Summer Solstice
15 Hours of Non-Stop Entertainment Will Mark Second Annual Summer Solstice Celebration June 21
June 2, 2003

Summer Solstice, 2002
Building on the success of last year’s "way-cool" (Delaware County Times) event featuring "top-notch performers" (The Philadelphia Inquirer) that are "anything but the usual stuff" (Trenton Times), the 2003 Summer Solstice celebration will start a little earlier this time with family entertainment including Mum Puppettheatre, singers John Flynn and Daria, storytelling by Kala Jojo and performances by Kimmel Center Resident Company American Theater Arts for Youth (ATAFY.)
The longest day of the year is the perfect opportunity to check out all corners of the Kimmel Center. Catch Peter Nero playing in a rare jazz duo format with bassist Michael Barnett or the Ryan Irish Dancers in Verizon Hall. Check out the belly dancing (believed to be a Kimmel Center first) in Perelman Theater or get on the dance floor yourself with the Philadelphia Funk Authority or Gamble and Huff’s Grace Little and Damon. Take in a classical music performance by members of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia or the Trillium harp trio in the Rendell Room, then head down to the subterranean Innovation Studio for cabaret, jazz and drinks. Explore the interactive exhibits at the Merck Arts Education Center, do a little late-night shopping at Intermission, the Kimmel Center gift shop, or head to the roof and gaze at the stars from the Dorrance H. Hamilton Garden
Other featured performers include members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Bootsie Barnes Trio, the Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble, members of the cast of the Broadway musical Mamma Mia, the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society, Thee Phantom, Vanishing Peoples of the Earth, John Breslin’s Dixieland Band, Traci Hall Dance Company, Pig Iron Theatre, Royal Palm Steel Drum Band, Bald Mermaids, Townhall and singer-songwriters Matt Sevier and Amber deLaurentis.
All who are still standing at dawn (quite a few made it last year!) can gather in Commonwealth Plaza for the sunrise drum circle. The public is invited to BYOD (Bring Your Own Drum) and watch the sunrise over the Kimmel Center’s soaring 150-foot glass ceiling.
Tickets for Summer Solstice are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org, or at the Kimmel Center box office, open 10am to 6pm daily and later on performance evenings.
Summer Solstice is also the perfect time to make the rest of your Kimmel Center summer plans. All tickets for Kimmel Center Presents Summer in the City events purchased at the box office during the Summer Solstice celebration will be 10% off. The box office will be open all night. For a complete schedule visit online at www.kimmelcenter.org.
