New Season Schedule Adds Performances by Three Mo’ Tenors, Angelique Kidjo, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Jane Monheit and Philadelphia Premiere of Rorem Opera Miss Julie

Single tickets go on sale at 10 am Friday, August 1, for all Kimmel Center Presents 2003/2004 season performances and events. The first 100 ticket buyers at the Kimmel Center box office that morning will receive a free gift, and the first chance for the best seats to Philadelphia’s most exciting upcoming events.

The third season of Kimmel Center Presents programming features 79 performances and includes an expanded jazz schedule, more world music, dance, family events, visiting orchestras and master musicians from around the world in performances at both the Kimmel Center and the Academy of Music.

Since the new season was announced last spring, several performances have been added to the 2003-2004 lineup including: Grammy-winning banjo player Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (October 12), jazz vocalist Jane Monheit in a special Valentine’s Day performance (February 14), West African-born singer Angelique Kidjo (February 28) and, back by popular demand, Jerry Blavat’s 2nd Annual Street Corner Harmony Spectacular (January 11) and Cook, Dixon and Young formerly known as Three Mo’ Tenors (May 9). Kimmel Center Presents is also collaborating with the Curtis Institute of Music in a rare production of Ned Rorem’s Miss Julie, for what will be the first opera in the Perelman Theater with two performances on November 7.

Other season highlights include Mellon Jazz Up Close: Dreaming of Dizzy, a new jazz series curated by pianist Danilo Perez with five concerts dedicated to the works of Dizzy Gillespie; Fresh Ink, a classical music series focusing on 21st century music and providing the audience a chance to meet up-and-coming artists including violinist Jennifer Koh and string quartet Ethel; and Fleet Family Beat, with entertainment for the whole family including Tom Chapin, the Salzburg Marionettes and Sharon, Bram and Friends.

Wachovia Classics: Great Orchestras on Tour and Master Musicians will showcase the finest classical musicians from around the world including violinists Itzhak Perlman (note the new date: January 25, 2004) Hilary Hahn, Pinchas Zukerman and Anne-Sophie Mutter performing with husband and pianist André Previn and cellist Lynn Harell; pianists Peter Serkin, Alfred Brendel and Murray Perahia; and vocalists Denyce Graves, Renée Fleming and Ben Heppner. This season’s visiting orchestras will be the renowned Berlin Philharmonic, the 2003 Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Symphony, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebeouw Orchestra and Zurich’s Tonhalle Orchestra. Mellon Jazz: Fridays and Mellon Jazz: Wednesdays will expand the jazz programming in Verizon Hall with jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, George Shearing and the John Pizzarelli Trio, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Cassandra Wilson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Arturo Sandoval, the Newport Jazz Festival’s 50th Anniversary Tour and Medeski, Martin & Wood plus a special Philly All-Star Night featuring an evening of great Philadelphia jazz musicians.

Expanding on the diverse offerings of the past two seasons, and the 2002 and 2003 summer concert series, Kimmel Center Presents 2003/2004 season features a number of world music and pop offerings. Sovereign Bank World/Pop Mix features Sweet Honey in the Rock, Peter, Paul & Mary, Cesaria Evora and Tania Libertad, Vienna Choir Boys, Nancy Wilson and Ramsey Lewis, Blind Boys of Alabama with special guests Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples and John Medeski, Paco de Lucia and The Chieftains all in performance in Verizon Hall. (Please note the John Williams performance originally scheduled for November 5, 2003 has been cancelled.) The series in the Perelman Theater features Ireland’s Solas, Israel’s Chava Alberstein and Palestine’s Simon Shaheen, all making their Kimmel Center debuts, and India’s Anoushka Shankar, who returns this season for a solo performance.

Movers and Shakers will bring dance to the Perelman Theater and the Academy of Music with return engagements by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, plus fall and spring appearances by PHILADANCO, the Kimmel Center’s resident dance company which consistently plays to sold out houses.

A limited number of $10 tickets will be available for every Kimmel Center Presents performance. $10 tickets go on sale the day of the event and can be purchased at the Kimmel Center box office beginning at 5:30 pm for evening performances and 11:30 am for matinees. Limit one per person.
