Young Musicians Selected for Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble
Students from 32 Schools Learn Jazz, Serve as Kimmel Center Ambassadors
November 11, 2003

This year’s ensemble will include 24 new members and 23 returning from last year’s inaugural ensemble. Students hail from 10 different schools in Philadelphia, 14 schools in the Pennsylvania suburbs and eight schools in South Jersey. All students were selected through competitive auditions held at the Kimmel Center in October.
Kimmel Center, Inc. created the Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble, now in its second season, to cultivate and train gifted young artists, while exposing them to a classic American art form. These young musicians now have an opportunity not only to train with accomplished jazz musicians and teachers but also to gain performance experience through appearances at the Kimmel Center and its concert halls. The ensemble also performs throughout the region as an ambassador for the Kimmel Center to the community. The Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble debuted at the performing arts center’s first anniversary celebration last year.
The ensemble is directed by Kimmel Center Teaching Artist Marc Johnson, a jazz pianist and trombonist who has played in the U.S. and abroad with jazz luminaries such as JJ Johnson, Slide Hampton, Al Grey, Clarke Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Heath and Phil Woods as well as vocalists Lena Horne, Lou Rawls and Dianne Shurr.
