Angelique Kidjo and Paco de Lucía Make Kimmel Center Debuts
February 3, 2004

Angelique Kidjo
The "electrifying" Angelique Kidjo offers a blend of Beninese tribal music and Afro-pop, mixing funk, salsa, jazz, rumba, and traditional African souk and makossa. Her seventh album, Black Ivory Soul, explores the musical kinship between Africa and Brazil, specifically her Benin homeland and the city of Bahia. Black Ivory Soul is highlighted by Kidjo's songwriting collaborations with Brazilian musicians Carlinhos Brown and Vinicius Cantuaria, and by guest appearances by such artists as Dave Matthews who said of the singer: "If God had a voice, it would sound like Angelique Kidjo."
Tickets for the February 28 performance by Angelique Kidjo are $28 & $38.
Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucía has revolutionized the role of the guitar in flamenco music and today stands as its most revered figure. Taking traditions of the old and melding them with the new, Paco de Lucía has forged a new style of flamenco, fusing elements of Brazilian bossa nova, Latin salsa and Afro-Peruvian percussion, along with American jazz and blues. His most popular release, 1998’s Luzia, has had fans eagerly awaiting the release of his latest CD, Cositas Buenas.
