Kimmel Center’s Wachovia Classics: Master Musicians Continues with World-Renowned Tenor Ben Heppner on March 7
February 9, 2004

Recognized internationally as the preeminent dramatic tenor of his day, Ben Heppner will conclude the Kimmel Center Presents Wachovia Classics: Master Musicians, Voice series on Sunday, March 7 at 2 pm in Verizon Hall.

Heralded as "a Tristan for the new millennium,"' Heppner is considered to be one of today’s leading interpreters of Wagner. His debut performance of Tristan in 1998 was a historic occasion, hailed as the "opera event of the year" (La Scena Musicale), and attended by fans from 13 countries and 44 states (along with nearly every major music critic in the world!). Mr. Heppner’s recording of Die Miestersinger in the same year earned him a Grammy, and a live recording of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, featuring Heppner with the London Symphony Orchestra, won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Classical Album and Best Opera Album. His vast repertoire includes works as diverse as Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, William Bolcom’s McTeague, and Britten’s War Requiem.

Noted for his bold approach to the most challenging operatic roles, Heppner appears regularly with the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Opera National de Paris, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. He also has performed with every leading orchestra, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and records exclusively for Deutsche Grammophon.

Ben Heppner will appear with pianist Craig Rutenberg, a "superb and fearless artist" (Boston Globe) and his long-time accompanist who is known for successful collaborations with many of the world’s greatest vocalists, in a performance of compositions by Britten, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, and Paolo Tosti.
