Philadelphia’s "Jazz Hot Spot" heats up in March when the Kimmel Center’s Mellon Jazz series continues with the debut performance of trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and an encore performance by Los Hombres Calientes on Wednesday, March 3 at 8pm. Kimmel Center Presents is also proud to celebrate the history of jazz in Philadelphia with Philly All-Star Jazz Night on Friday, March 5 at 8pm.

Celebrated Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was born just two years after Dizzy Gillespie first introduced Latin influences into American jazz. Sandoval first began playing classical trumpet at 12 years old, but quickly found his home in the heart of jazz. A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, and a member of Dizzy’s famous United Nation Orchestra, Gillespie called Sandoval "my first son." As a composer, Sandoval was commissioned by the Kennedy Center for the ballet Pepito’s Story and the musical Soul Possessed, both choreographed by Debbie Allen. He has performed and/or underscored for such feature films as Mambo Kings, Random Hearts, and HBO’s For Love Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story which earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Movie.

Grammy-nominated Los Hombres Calientes got their start just three years ago. In that short time, the group has established itself as one of the most sought-after multi-ethnic musical ensembles today. Led by percussionist/ethnomusicologist Bill Summers and trumpeter/composer Irvin Mayfield, the group is a cross generational ensemble with young and seasoned artists, playing African-derived music from North America, Cuba and Brazil. Los Hombres Calientes made their Kimmel Center debut in the summer of 2002, and will open this evening of performances.

Philadelphia has one of the richest histories of jazz and what better way to tell the story than with the legends of Philly’s jazz scene themselves? Philly All-Star Jazz Night is a salute to that history with an incredible line-up of some of Philadelphia’s most treasured jazz musicians, including jazz violinist John Blake, organist Joey DeFrancesco (the son of Papa De Francesco), saxophonist James Moody, guitarist Pat Martino with special (non-Philadelphian) guest Jim Ridl.
