Kimmel Center Presents Wachovia Classics: Master Musicians Presents Alfred Brendel at Verizon Hall, March 26, 2004
March 4, 2004

Alfred Brendel
The program will include Mozart: Fantasia in C Minor, K. 396, Sonata in B flat Major, K. 281 and Sonata in E flat Major, K. 282; Schubert: Drei Klavierstucke D. 946; and Beethoven: Sonata No. 30 in E Major, Op. 109.
Brendel was given his first piano lesson at the age of six and finished his formal training at age sixteen. He made his first recordings during the 1950’s and in the 1960’s became the first pianist ever to record the entire piano works of Beethoven. A regular guest of the great orchestras of Europe, Alfred Brendel is also one of the few pianists to have recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos. As well as playing a prominent role in championing Schubert’s piano sonatas, he has recorded a complete cycle of his mature piano works, 1822-28, as well as establishing Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto in the concert repertoire. During the 1990’s, Brendel releases included Brahm’s Second Piano Concerto, sonatas by Hayden and a Mozart solo recital. To celebrate his 65th birthday, Philips released a 25 disc boxed set entitled The Art of Alfred Brendel.
In December 1998, Alfred Brendel was made an honorary member of the Wiener Philharmoniker. Since the orchestra’s foundation in 1842, it is an honor that has been conferred by only two other pianists, Emil Von Sauer and Wilhelm Backhaus.
The Kimmel Center Presents Wachovia Classics: Master Musicians piano series continues with Murray Perahia, the award-winning protégé of the great Vladimir Horowitz, on Sunday, April 25 at 2pm.
