April 16, 2004

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will return to Philadelphia for four performances on Thursday, May 13 at 8pm, Friday, May 14 at 8pm and Saturday, May 15 at 2pm and 8pm at the Academy of Music.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was founded in 1958. Unlike most other modern dance companies, Mr. Ailey's purpose was not to create a repository for his own works but to establish a multi-racial repertory company dedicated to the presentation of important American dance works from the past as well as new works by both established and emerging choreographers. Morgan Stanley is the national sponsor of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is currently on a 22-city American tour to celebrate their 45th Anniversary season. Artistic Director and Philadelphia native Judith Jamison will present a combination of Ailey repertory favorites and world premieres. The premieres in Philadelphia will include Heart Song, choreographed by Alonzo King; Juba, choreographed by Robert Battle and Bounty Verses, choreographed by Dwight Rhoden . Fans can expect to see classic favorites including the seminal Revelations, Hymn and Treading.

The programming for each performance is as follows: Thursday, 5/13/04 - HEART SONG (Alonzo King), TREADING (Elisa Monte), JUBA (Robert Battle) and REVELATIONS (Alvin Ailey); Friday, 5/14/04 - BOUNTY VERSES (Dwight Rhoden), HYMN (Judith Jamison) and REVELATIONS (Alvin Ailey); Saturday, 5/15/04 (matinee)- AILEY CLASSICS-Excerpts from classic works by Alvin Ailey including "Revelations" in its entirety; Saturday, 5/15/04 (evening) - HEART SONG (Alonzo King), TREADING (Elisa Monte), JUBA (Robert Battle) and REVELATIONS (Alvin Ailey).

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues its mission to bring the beauty of dance to young people and underserved audiences by leading an acclaimed week long residency program at Philadelphia’s William Meredith School (South Fifth Street) from April 26-30. Revelations: An Interdisciplinary Approach is a curriculum-based educational residency program that allows teachers and students to examine Alvin Ailey’s signature work, Revelations, through social, cultural, historical and aesthetic lenses, connecting it to subjects such as language arts, history and social studies. This program is presented in collaboration with the Kimmel Center’s Education Department. More than 50 sixth-grade students will participate in the program designed to promote student learning by engaging analytic and creative thinking skills while introducing students to the work and mission of Alvin Ailey. Participants will also attend a special school-time performance when the Company performs at The Academy of Music in May.
