"Sax in the City"
Sax Players of All Ages Needed for Jam Session Kicking off Kimmel’s "Year of Incredible Sax"

August 25, 2004

Saxophone players young and old, professional and amateur, are invited to help the Kimmel Center celebrate the start of its fourth season on Friday, September 17 with a giant jam session to be held on all levels of the performing arts center on opening night.

"Sax in the City" will be held at 7pm, just prior to the Verizon Hall performance of the legendary jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Coleman’s rare appearance marks the start of the Kimmel Center Presents Mellon Jazz Fridays series, a series that will explore the saxophone in all its voices.

Saxophone players will line the Kimmel Center tiers and perform two jazz classics: John Coltrane’s "Equinox," and Sonny Rollins’ "St. Thomas." Philadelphia sax virtuoso Odean Pope will direct.

Saxophone players of all ages and abilities are welcome, but must register for "Sax in the City" by using the online registration form.

The 2004-2005 season of Kimmel Center Presents includes two extraordinary jazz series. Mellon Jazz Fridays, in Verizon Hall, features star musicians like Coleman, Rollins, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and Dave Brubeck. Mellon Jazz Up Close: Take the Col’train, in the more intimate Perelman Theater, offers a year-long tribute to Philadelphia adopted son and saxophonist John Coltrane. Both series will feature saxophone legends and special guest soloists, making this the Kimmel Center’s "year of incredible sax."
