Dan Zanes and Friends Invite Kids and Adults of All Ages to Enjoy a Unique Spin on Some Children’s Classics
September 27, 2004

Kimmel Center Presents invites children and adults of all ages to enjoy a rollicking folk concert like none other when Dan Zanes and Friends perform in the Perelman Theater on October 23, 2004 at 11am and 2pm as part of the Family Beat series. Zanes, former guitarist of the Del Fuegos, gives children’s classics like "Waltzing Matilda" and "The Hokey Pokey" his own gritty spin, mixing them with irresistible original songs. During the show, kids are invited to take part in the concert and dance with Zanes and his friends.

Zanes’ acclaimed all-ages recordings, including his groundbreaking family folk album Rocket Ship Beach and his recent collection of maritime songs, Sea Music, are much like his live shows—celebrations of communal music making. Zanes’ show will feature favorites from his previous albums and hits from the recently-released album Parades and Panoramas, on which he renders 25 of 280 traditional songs Carl Sandburg compiled and annotated in his little-known 1927 songbook, The American Songbag. The text is a meticulously indexed and illustrated collection of "ballads, hobo songs, spirituals, steamboat, railroad and lumberjack songs, close harmony ditties, colonial songs, love songs." Or, as Sandburg calls it in his introduction, "a ragbag of strips, stripes, and streaks of color from nearly all ends of the earth."

Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Cynthia Hopkins, singer/guitarist Barbara Brousal, bassist Yoshi Waki, drummer Colin Brooks and rapper/emcee Rankin’ Don (a.k.a. Father Goose) will perform with Zanes in concert.

Tickets for the October 23 performances by Dan Zanes and Friends are $15 and $20 and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org or at the Kimmel Center box office, open daily from 10am to 6pm and later on performance evenings. For group sales call 215-790-5883.
