Lang, who has recorded more than 13 albums, recently released her newest album, Hymns of the 49th Parallel, on which she pays homage to fellow Canadian artists including Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Jane Siberry, Ron Sexsmith and Bruce Cockburn. Lang fulfilled a long-lasting desire to create this Canadian songbook, which has already received vast acclaim. USA Today says that "lang’s gently resonant singing is arguably best suited to the kind of graceful folk-pop tunes that dominate this tribute to her fellow Canadian songwriters," adding that on the recording "lang exudes an utterly unaffected warmth." "A modern Sinatra," according to Blender, "lang transcends even the finest work the authors offer." In lang’s own words, "These songs are part of my cultural fabric, my Canadian soundtrack. They have nurtured my musical DNA."
Lang will perform songs from Hymns at her Kimmel Center performance in addition to material spanning her entire career. Lang, who attracts a loyal, diverse, and multi-generational crowd, is more than a pop artist. Her albums include collections of straight-up country (Shadowland), urbane adult pop (Ingenue, which featured the hit "Constant Craving"), sophisticated torch (Drag), and a little disco (for the soundtrack of Gus Van Sant’s Even Cowgirls Get the Blues).
Pianist Teddy Borowiecki, bassist David Piltch, guitarist Greg Leisz, drummer Danny Frankel, conductor Charles Floyd, and locally-based musicians will accompany lang.
The string trio Time for Three is comprised of violinists Zachary DePue and Nicolas Kendall as well as double bassist Ranaan Meyer. The group came together while its members were enrolled at the Curtis Institute of Music. They started playing together for fun and have since evolved into a charismatic ensemble that has performed on FOX 29’s Good Day Philadelphia telecast, at the Liberty Medal Awards Ceremony honoring Colin Powell, and on Philadelphia’s WXPN and WRTI radio stations. Recently, Time for Three has appeared at the Endless Mountains Arts Series Festival, the Brooklyn Friends of Music Chamber Series, as Artists in Residence at Philadelphia’s Fleisher Art Memorial and with the Ocean City (NJ) Pops.
