Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

Internationally Renowned Musicians and Siblings Gil and Orli Shaham at the Kimmel Center November 4
October 11, 2004

Internationally recognized violinist Gil Shaham and his sister, pianist Orli Shaham, will make their Kimmel Center Presents debut on stage at Verizon Hall on November 4, 2004 at 8pm. This concert is the first in the Kimmel Center Presents Wachovia Master Musicians string series. The Shahams’ performance will include works by Mozart and Prokofiev.

Violinist Gil Shaham is recognized around the world by audiences and many noted critics as one of today’s most virtuosic and engaging classical artists. At the age of 18, the Julliard-trained Shaham was tapped to step in at the London Symphony Orchestra for Itzhak Perlman. In 1998, he won a Grammy Award for his recital album American Scenes with André Previn at the piano. In addition, Shaham is sought after throughout the world for concerto appearances with celebrated orchestras as well as for recital and ensemble appearances on the great concert stages and at prestigious festivals.

Born in Champaign-Urbana, IL in 1971, Gil Shaham moved with his parents to Israel in 1973. It was there, at the age of seven, that he began violin studies with Samuel Bernstein of the Rubin Academy of Music and was immediately granted annual scholarships by the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. In 1981, while studying with Haim Taub in Jerusalem, he made debuts with the Jerusalem Symphony and the Israel Philharmonic. He took first prize in Israel’s Claremont Competition the following year and became a scholarship student at Juilliard where he worked Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang. Shaham also studied at Columbia University and was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990.

Pianist Orli Shaham will join her brother on stage during the concert. She too has established an impressive international reputation as one of today’s most gifted young performers. She recently made successful debuts with the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras, numerous acclaimed recitals, and an American tour as soloist with the Jerusalem Symphony. Orli has also been awarded two of the most prestigious prizes given to further the development of outstanding talent, the Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1995 and the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1997.

Orli Shaham has been recognized as an exceptional artist since the age of five, when she was awarded her first scholarship for musical study from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. At age 7, she came to New York with her family and was accepted at the Juilliard School as a scholarship student the following year.
