McCoy Tyner
Philadelphia’s contribution to jazz is again featured during Philly All-Star Jazz Night when jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, who has his own star on Philadelphia’s Music Walk of Fame, welcomes several other well-known locals to join him on stage. Philly’s own saxmen Gary Bartz and Bootsie Barnes, along with trumpet player Terrell Stafford will combine with the McCoy Tyner Trio onstage at Verizon Hall on Friday, Nov. 12 at 8 pm. Tyner, who was discovered at age 17 by the legendary John Coltrane, has gained international notoriety with his dynamic flair on the piano keyboard.
Another local jazz star will open the concert—Bass player Gerald Veasley and his Electric Mingus Project. Veasley will pay tribute to the legendary bassist Charles Mingus, mixing in his own smooth funk/R&B style.
The jazz journey continues to Brazil when ‘Take the Col’train’ welcomes Rio-born trumpet star Claudio Roditi, who mixes Brazilian rhythmic concepts with his own ‘hard bop-oriented’ style. Roditi gained notoriety as a young jazz artist in his native Brazil when, at age 20, he was named a finalist in the International Jazz Competition in Vienna. He left Brazil in 1970 to study at the Berklee School of Music. A strikingly proficient technician, Roditi, brings enormous zest and fire to his special blend of Latin jazz. Philly’s Gary Bartz joins Roditi on sax to add some local flair to the Latin sound.
