The Kimmel Center will mark its 3rd anniversary on Dec. 11 with a free performance by the Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble.
The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will mark its third anniversary on Saturday, Dec. 11 with a special ‘Free In The Plaza’ performance by the Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble in Commonwealth Plaza at Noon.

The ensemble, one of the first community-based efforts of the Kimmel’s education department, first made its debut two years ago this weekend at the first anniversary open house.

Under the direction of Philadelphia jazz artist Marc D. Johnson, the original Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensemble was comprised of middle school students from throughout the Delaware Valley who were chosen by audition. The group has grown into two separate ensembles, featuring middle school and high school age students.

The Kimmel Center Youth Jazz Ensembles will perform works by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Oliver Nelson.

The ensemble’s December 11 performance will precede performances of the Vienna Choir Boys that day at 3pm at Verizon Hall, and the Mellon Jazz ‘Take the Col’train’ concert featuring Claudio Roditi and Gary Bartz at 7:30pm in the Perelman Theater. "It is hard to believe that we are already three years old", said Mervon Mehta, the Kimmel Center’s VP of Programming and Education. "The performances we offer today encompass many facets of what we are all about from education programs to Kimmel Center exclusive concerts, from classical music to jazz, from free community performances to renowned touring ensembles."

Sponsors of the 2004-2005 Kimmel Center Presents season include Mellon Financial Corporation, University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Bank of America, Sovereign Bank, Wachovia Foundation, The American Express Company, Verizon Foundation, Bucks County Coffee, and SEPTA, the Commuter’s Choice. American Airlines is the Official Airline of Kimmel Center Presents. Toyota is the Official Vehicle of Kimmel Center Presents Jazz and World Pop programming.
