The stage production of HOLES, based on the award-winning novel by Louis Sachar will make its Academy of Music debut January 19 - 23 for eight performances. The production comes from The People’s Light & Theatre Company and is directed by David Bradley. HOLES is part of the Kimmel Center Presents Citizens Bank Broadway at the Academy series.

A great holiday gift, ticket prices range from $5 to $32.50. Tickets can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org/broadway, at either the Kimmel Center box office (open daily 10am to 6pm and later on performance evenings), or the Academy of Music box office on performance afternoons and evenings only. The HOLES performance schedule is: January 19 matinees at 10am & 1:30pm; January 20 matinee at 10am; January 21 at 10am & 7pm; January 22 at 2 pm & 7 pm; and January 23 at 2pm. Special group rates are available for groups of 15 or more.

The stage production of HOLES is adapted by author Louis Sachar and based on his best-selling children’s novel. Sachar also wrote the screenplay for the movie, which premiered in 2003. Holes is the winner of the Newberry Medal, the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and was listed as a Notable Children’s Book of the Year by The New York Times Book Review. The popular novel is part of the reading curriculum for many elementary and middle-aged school students and is a favorite of all. Sachar is also the author of Sideways Stories from the Wayside School, another award-winning novel.

HOLES opened last year to rave reviews and sold-out audiences at The People’s Light Malvern-based theatre. The local cast features a mix of company members and veterans of the Theatre School at People’s Light and the New Voices Ensemble. P.J. McCabe stars as ‘Stanley,’ and Mark del Guzzo is his friend ‘Zero.’ Antoine McClary plays the leader of the camp boys, ‘X-Ray,’ Julian Swiggett is ‘Armpit,’ Jake DeLaurier is the sticky-fingered ‘Magnet’ and David Good is ‘Zigzag.’ Company member Kathryn Peterson plays the camp’s ‘Warden,’ while Susan McKey appears as the notorious outlaw ‘Kissin’ Kate Barlow.’

Director David Bradley is joined on the production team by Set Designer and People’s Light Director of Design James F. Pyne, Jr. and Resident Costume Designer Maria J. Jurglanis. Bradley, an Associate Artistic Director at People’s Light, also leads the theatre’s Arts Education Program.

His productions include "A View From the Bridge," "He Held Me Grand," "The Dreaming of Aloysius," "The Music Lesson," "The Diary of Anne Frank," "The Icarus Box," "Crow & Weasel," "A Village Fable," and "Hush: An Interview with America."

"HOLES is a great story for the stage," said Bradley. "It’s become a modern classic--so many young people have read the story that it’s become a modern tale. If you like Holes, this is your opportunity to see it in three dimensions with live performers and watch it come to life in your presence. I think the story speaks eloquently about how the choices we make can have innumerable consequences, not only for ourselves but for our communities and the people who live there. Plus, it’s just a great yarn. You can’t help but be pulled by it."

HOLES explores issues of friendship, homelessness, juvenile delinquency and racism. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the production "is a highly engaging little gem of a theatre piece that will appeal to adults as well as children."

The Citizens Bank Broadway at the Academy 2004-2005 theater season will also feature Disney’s On the Record (Jan. 5 - 16), The Ten Tenors (March 18 - 19), Peter Pan starring Cathy Rigby (March 22 - 27), Tim Conway & Harvey Korman - Together Again (March 31), Smokey Joe’s Cafe (April 1 - 3), Riverdance (April 5 - 10) and Evita (June 20 - 26).
