Italian Tenor Extraordinaire Salvatore Licitra Debuts at Verizon Hall January 19
Concert is One of Kimmel Center Presents Master Musicians Series
December 20, 2004

Often compared to Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Enrico Caruso and even his teacher Carlo Bergonzi, Mr. Licitra has his own style "rich and muscular, with dark, baritonal quality" that is different from his current peers, both old and new. The extraordinary young tenor first made worldwide musical headlines when, as an understudy, he stepped in for Luciano Pavarotti’s final performance at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 2002. Mr. Licitra will make his debut at the Met this coming March, his first appearance there since filling in for Pavarotti two years ago.
"With the opera world desperate to fill the void left by Pavarotti’s departure and the inevitable retirement in a few years of Placido Domingo (now 62), there’s a lot riding on Licitra," said the Associated Press. "If the young Sicilian, who launched his singing career only five years ago, continues to develop, there’s every hope he will become a worthy heir."
Mr. Licitra’s Kimmel Center concert will include the works of Rossini, Bellini, Tosti and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, as well as asking audiences to request their favorite aria! He will be accompanied by Eugene Kohn, who has also accompanied Pavarotti and Maria Callas, among others.
