New York Philharmonic Returns with Maestro Lorin Maazel
Lorin Maazel, who became Music Director in 2002, follows such legends as Bernstein, Boulez, Mehta and Masur. Under Maazel, the Philharmonic gave its 14,000th concert on December 18, 2004. In 2003, the Philharmonic was honored by The Recording Academy with a Trustees Award in recognition of the organization’s outstanding contributions to the industry and American culture. Members of the Philharmonic also performed on the 45th Annual Grammy awards ceremony, broadcast internationally on television from New York’s Madison Square Garden. It was the first time that a major symphony orchestra has performed live on the Grammy awards. Recently, the Philharmonic’s recording of John Adam’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work On the Transmigration of Souls, received three 2004 Grammy nominations.
After a recent fall performance, The New York Sun said "By any reckoning, Mr. Maazel is a formidable man... His combination of learning, experience, and talent is hard to beat... He is about as good as it gets these days." In a review by The New York Times, "The Philharmonic is playing better than I have ever heard it play...the audience left the concert buzzing with pleasure."
Pianist Stephen Hough will appear as guest soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Rounding out the program will be Honegger’s Pacific 231.
