André Previn, who became the Music Director of the 86-year-old orchestra in 2002 and is set to step down in 2006, is an accomplished and versatile conductor, composer and pianist. Aside from being a frequent guest with many of the world’s premier orchestras, Previn’s many honors include the Cross of Merit from both Austria and Germany, several Grammy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Achievement, Musical America’s "Musician of the Year", the Grand Prix du Disque, and a Knighthood (KBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2005 alone, Previn has received both the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize and a Grammy for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra for his "Violin Concerto, Anne-Sophie" commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and featuring Mutter as a soloist and Previn as a conductor.
Under Previn, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra gives up to 80 concerts annually, and has performed with great success at the BBC Proms, the Lucerne Festival, in Vienna Musikverein and at prominent venues in Spain, Germany and Switzerland. The orchestra has received 5 Norwegian Grammy Awards, the Norwegian Critics’ Award, the French Grand Prix du Disque, and the Norwegian Peer Gynt Prize. The orchestra has also been nominated by the International Grammy Awards, the International Classical Music Awards, and Mumm Champagne Classical Music Awards/Ovation. In describing the sound of the orchestra, the Financial Times said that it plays with a "rich and sweet-sour resonance that stands out like a silk topper among a sea of baseball caps."
Anne-Sophie Mutter, who ranks among the world’s most outstanding violin virtuosos, performs Previn’s 2001 Violin Concerto. A string of awards over the course of Mutter’s thirty-year career include the German Record Prize, the Record Academy Prize, the Order of the Federal Republic of Germany (First Class), the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Medal of Merit (Verdienstmedaille) of the state of Baden-Württemberg, the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art, the Grand Prix du Disque, the International Record Prize and several Grammy Awards, including the 2005 Grammy with Previn.
