André Watts has been a prominent figure in the music world for over 40 years, since his debut at the ripe age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to perform with the New York Philharmonic. Watts’ delicate skills with the piano have led him to perform with symphony orchestras all over the globe. The youngest person to ever receive an Honorary Doctorate from Yale University and a featured artist on the Great Pianists of the 20th Century, he continues to embrace new opportunities in the world of music. Most recently, Watts began teaching at Indiana University, filling the Jack I. And Dora B. Hamlin Endowed Chair in Music.
Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos is regarded as one of the world’s leading and most respected conductors. He has worked with over 15 international symphony orchestras, including Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Spanish National Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and even Philadelphia Orchestra. In Europe, Maestro Frühbeck de Burgos is the Permanent conductor of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the recipient of the Grand Cross of Civil Merit from the German Federal Republic in 2001. Since his start as a conductor, he has made over 100 recordings and continues to delight audiences with tuneful, exotically scored masterpieces.
Founded in 1842 by a local group of musicians, the New York Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in America. Since its inception, the New York Philharmonic has been a significant contributor to the progression of classical music as we know it. The Philharmonic has been led by musical giants such as Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, Dvorak, Copland, Stravinsky and Leonard Bernstein. Celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2003, the Philharmonic has recorded nearly 2,000 albums and performed in 412 cities in 57 countries.
