Nine-Time Grammy Award Winning Marsalis and The Acclaimed Ensemble Jazz Up the Holiday Favorite, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcrakcer

Wynton Marsalis brings The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestrato the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall for a special holiday performance of the great Duke Ellington’s Harlem Nutcracker, a jazzy rendition of the beloved music of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, on Sunday, December 11, 2005 at 8pm. Audiences of all ages will enjoy “Toot Toot Tootie Toot,” “Peanut Brittle Brigade” and “Sugar Rum Cherry,” which is Ellington and Strayhorn’s take on the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” original. The second half of the evening will feature the LCJO performing from an extensive repertoire that includes original compositions by Marsalis, Ted Nash and other members of the 15-member orchestra as well as the masterworks of Count Basie, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and other great jazz composers.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis is part of the Mellon Jazz series of concerts at the Kimmel Center. Upcoming performances include: Brad Mehldau and Gary Burton Generations on Friday, January 27, 2006 at 8pm; Marcus Roberts Trio and the San Francisco Jazz Collective on Friday, March 24, 2005 at 8pm; and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Band on Friday, April 21, 2005 at 8pm.

New Orleans native Wynton Marsalis, of the accomplished Marsalis family, is one of the most distinguished and acclaimed jazz and classical artists and composers of his time. Since the age of 12, he has touched listeners with his mature and sensitive approach to the trumpet and continues to share his gifts with the world as an internationally respected teacher and spokesman for music education and as Music Director of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in New York. Since his recording debut in 1982, he has produced an impressive 40 jazz and classical recordings for Columbia Jazz and Sony Classical, which have won the artist nine Grammy Awards. Marsalis has also composed works for Jazz at Lincoln Center including the 1999 Them Twos and the 2002 Sony-Classical release All Rise. His accolades include: one of “America’s Most Influential People” by Time magazine; the United Nations designation of “Messenger of Peace” by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan; the Congressional “Horizon Award”; and a Pultizer Prize, the first for a jazz composer.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, composed of many of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1988. Jazz at Lincoln Center features the versatile LCJO in nearly all aspects of its programming: the LCJO performs and leads educational events in New York, across the U.S., and around the world; in concert halls, dance venues, jazz clubs, public parks, river boats, and churches; and with symphony orchestras, ballet troupes, students, and an ever-expanding roster of guest artists. The LCJO performs a vast repertory spanning the history of jazz, from masterpieces by composers such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, and Charles Mingus, to commissioned works by Benny Carter, Joe Henderson, Jimmy Heath, Chico O'Farrill, current and former members of the LCJO, and others.

A limited number of $10 tickets are available for every Kimmel Center Presents performance at the Kimmel Center.
