Daniel Barenboim made his musical debut at the age of seven as a pianist at a concert in his native city, Buenos Aires. He steadily gained international renown as a pianist as he traveled around Europe while studying both conducting and composition with the giants of Europe. With a distinguished career that includes working as Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Barenboim is a universally recognized leading conductor. In the last decade, he has worked to promote dialogue and artistic exchange in the Middle East and was awarded numerous awards including the Spain’s Prince of Asturias Concord Prize in 2002, the Order of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Buber-Rosenzweig Medal, and the Haviva Reik Peace Award for his peace effors.

The Berlin Staatskapelle, also referred to as the Staatskapelle Berlin, is one of the oldest orchestras in the world with a history that dates back to 1570 when it was founded as Hofkapelle (Court Orchestra) by Kurfürts (Elektor) Joachim II of Brandenburg. The Staatskapelle is a grand tradition that has shaped the classical music of Germany and has evolved throughout the 20th century under the direction of personalities such as Richard Strauss, Leo Blech, Otto Klemperer, Clemens Krauss, Horst Stein, and Otmar Suitner. In February 2003 the Staatskapelle was awarded a Grammy for its recording of Wagner’s opera “Tannhäser”. In March it received the Wilhelm Furtwängler Preis together with its current Music Director, Daniel Barenboim.
