Jazz legend Roy Haynes is a drummer who has lived through nearly all eras of jazz. A self-taught musician, he earned the respect of other Boston musicians early on during his high school years. Reputedly Charlie Parker’s favorite drummer, Haynes developed his talent playing with giants like Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane, to name a few. He won two Grammy Awards in consecutive years during the 1980s as “Best instrumental performance group”. Officially declared a living National Treasure in 1988, Haynes continues to perform today.

Panamanian-born Danilo Perez has been recognized as one of the most influential and forward-thinking innovators in jazz music today. With three Grammy nominations and one Grammy award to his credit, Danilo, and his Pan-American Jazz (covering the music of the Americas, Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythm folkloric and world music), have gained a loyal following and international praise. Whether leading his own group or performing with some of the biggest legends in jazz such as Wayne Shorter and Roy Haynes, he continues to make his mark on jazz music.

Danilo began his musical studies at just three years old under the tutelage of his father. By age 10, he began his classical training at the National Conservatory of Panama. After receiving a degree in electronics, Danilo enrolled in Indiana University in Pennsylvania. But his love for music would force him to change his major to music, and he transferred to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He burst on to the scene as the youngest member of Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra in 1989. His 3-year stint with Dizzy and the orchestra earned him recognition as one of the masters of the eclectic, post-bop Latin style.

Since 1993, Danilo has made several albums as a bandleader, including The Journey, which was placed on several Top Ten Albums of 1994 lists. As the first jazz musician to play with the Panamanian Symphony Orchestra, Danilo performed an expanded version of The Journey with the 80-piece orchestra. He also gained international praise and recognition for his album Motherland, which The New York Times called "...one of the most ambitious jazz records of the last decade." Danilo Perez released his newest CD "till then” this year, which Wayne Shorter called "a prime example of confidence in a future laden with cornucopian gifts for all humanity." In addition to leading his own ensembles, Danilo is currently a member of the new Wayne Shorter Quartet. He has played with Roy Haynes for the past 5 years.
