A limited number of $10 tickets are available for every Kimmel Center Presents performance at the Kimmel Center. Tickets go on sale the day of the event and can be purchased at the Kimmel Center box office beginning 2.5 hours prior to evening performances and 11:30am for matinees.
John Medeski was first initiated into the music scene by his father, who played the piano for a hobby and performed at cocktail parties and family gatherings. Still, Medeski regarded himself a classical musician until he began playing more jazz during his education at the New England Conservatory of Music. A severe case of tendonitis almost put an end to his career but he was able to bounce back with the help of Richard Zukowski and the Hoshino therapy, bringing a whole new philosophy and life to his music. Today he continues to translate life to music using the plethora of sounds at his disposal.
Drummer Billy Martin grew up in a musical household. His father was a classical violinist and his mother was a Radio City Music Hall Rockette. Martin took up the drums when his family moved to New Jersey in 1973 and began attending classes at the Manhattan School of Music during his senior year of high school. During the eighties he immersed himself in the Manhattan music scene, playing in ensembles like John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, Batucada, and John Zorn’s Cobra. He released his first album with the Medesi, Martin, and Woods jazz trio in 1991 and has continued to revolutionize jazz in a way that defies categorization.
Chris Wood recalls his father, who was a singer and guitarist in the East Coast folk scene, as a key influence in his musical education. Wood’s initial performance education was with MST Entertainment, which gave him the opportunity to perform across genres with a group of older and more experience musicians. His formal education includes private lessons with talents from the New England Conservatory such as Geri Allen, Bob Moses and Dave Holland. Since then, his style has developed into a colorful exploration that illustrates his mastery of both the upright and electric bass and bold technique that brings an edge reminiscent of Charles Mingus.
