Cesaria Evora’s singing career began in the clubs and on the radio stations of her home town of Cape Verde, at the age of 16. Soon after her career began, she put her professional career on hold to raise a family and did not return to music until 1985. In 1988 she went to Paris to record La Dava Aux Pieds Nus (The Barefoot Diva), which received immediate wide acclaim throughout the Parisian Cape Verdean community and grew in popularity throughout Europe. Evora made her U.S. debut in 1995 with the release of her eponymous album, which was nominated for a Grammy. At the age of 66, Evora continues to perform 16-17 concerts a year and recently released her eleventh studio album, Rogamar, which includes the song “Africa Nossa” featuring Ismaël Lô.

Keren Ann, whose full name is Keren Ann Zeidel, is the daughter of a Javanese-Dutch mother and a Russian-Israeli father. In the late summer of 2004, she made her U.S. debut with the release of Not Going Anywhere. Self-described as her “very soft folk record,” it made an immediate impact with critics and fans. Prior to its release, Keren Ann created a buzz in New York with an extended residency, beginning in May, at the Lower East Side boutique club The Living Room and showcases at Joe’s Pub, where she unveiled her songs described by critics as “luminous,” “precise, not wispy” and “captivating.” Ann recently released her second U.S. album, Nolita to critical acclaim.

Nolita is, in a word, gorgeous. While Keren Ann sings in both French and English, her music is far more cafe than coffee house, more suitable for a seduction than an earnest conversation,” according to Joan Anderman of The Boston Globe.
